The Championship game against Herndon Flyers from Virginia started 11 AM on Monday.  They were the team that never got scored against for the entire weekend.

That record changed quickly 7 minutes after the kick off.  Sophomore defensive midfielder from Stuyvesant HS, Elisa Muyl, scored a flick header at near post, off a cross from a junior left back Tori Flynn from Staten Island-St. Joseph By the Sea HS.  Chargers continued to dominate through the 1st half despite their opponent’s physical, fast, direct play.

The opponent proved that they got there for a reason at the very end of 1st half.  The center referee called a foul against our right back Dana Krause, a sophomore from Lab Museum United for an obstruction.  Their 2nd kicker, off an indirect free kick,  took a very powerful shot over the head of our goal keeper Maggie Studsrud, a junior from Susan Wagner HS.

After the half time, both team’s shapes were stretched out because of heat and too many games played within short period; neither team created good chance to score.  The game went into two 20 minutes halves of over time, which resulted scoreless tie after 130 minutes of good competitive play.

The championship was going to be decided by penalty shoot out just like UEFA Champions League final this year.

Our 1st kicker Meghan Burke from Susan Wagner HS took a shot and hit the cross bar.  She had dominated the midfield with her physical and technical play against physical players during the game.  Our goal keeper had something to prove after she was scored on at the end of 1st half.  Maggie forced their 1st kicker to shoot high and wide.  Our 2nd kicker Tessa Decandido, a sophomore from UNIS, took her shot into upper 90’s.  Their 2nd kicker made a shot calmly into the low corner.  Our 3rd kicker Jessie Figueroa, a junior from HS for Arts & Business, took a shot opposite from the side the keeper guessed.  Maggie’s fingers saved their 3rd shot onto the cross bar.  When our 4th kicker Ebelyse Guaranda, a freshman from Cardozo HS, made a shot, the Charges won the trophy!
