GGFC Warriors kick off the WYSL DI Season with an Impressive Performance!
The Gotham Girls U-16 team got their short fall season off on the right foot by defeating the BW Gottschee team 3-0 on November 8, 2009.
The goals came from Zoe Babian, Ali Rossi and Sarah Miller. Keepers Anna Saltman and Ale Roubini kept the clean sheet for the Warriors.
The weather was perfect for soccer and the Warriors were ready to play a league match after so many friendlies with the GGFC U18 Chargers! The Warriors found their rythm on the field and controlled the game against a fast Gottschee side. The Warriors were rewarded with a goal when Nailah Venable won a fifty-fifty ball in midfield and sent the ball forward toward Babian, who was blanketed by two defenders. Babian was able to elude both of them with an amazing first touch that moved the ball to the right as the defenders went left. Babian’s finish was well deserved.
The second and third goals came from determination – Rossi refusing to be knocked off the ball put in the second goal shortly before half time and Miller killed off the game with a second half goal. The defense also came out strong and organized. Mellora Ansbro and Maggie Gibson controlled the middle and the outside backs, particularly Alva Pavio, created space and helped to start many attacks.
The Warriors see game action again Sunday November 15, 4:00pm at Pier 40.
