Weighing the Confidence Factor

The Mental Game

“Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

Muhammad Ali

Enhancing your mental focus is crucial to achieving peak performance in both training and competition. The team that is stronger mentally most often wins the game. Gotham Girls FC is committed to providing its players with the highest quality coaching, incorportating the physical and mental skills of soccer that are essential for players to improve. The GGFC coaches want their players to understand that training the mind is equally important to training the body. Dribbling, passing, and trapping are examples of soccer’s physical skills. Confidence, concentration, motivation, discipline, and patience are examples of the important mental skills of soccer. Practicing these skills the same way you practice dribbling, passing, and trapping will help you build your mental strength.

Confidence is believing in yourself. What are your strengths as a soccer player? Build on them, sharpen them, turn them into your weapons. Maybe its a great shot, or an accurate long ball. You can build soccer confidence by playing to your strengths. Once you have a nice foundation of confidence you can focus on the parts of your game that need improving. Maybe your left foot needs some attention and extra practice, or maybe its attention on sending a long ball with strength and accuracy, or controlling your first touch. Working on your confidence the same way that you do soccer skills will help you grow into a fantastic player.

Confidence is an athlete’s best friend. It is the most important factor determining whether she feels like a success or failure. As a parent, you want to do everything you can to develop your daughter’s confidence in soccer. This confidence will likely spill into other aspects of your child’s life. Doubt is the opposite of confidece. If your child maintains doubts prior to or during performance, this suggests low self-confidence.

Confidence is an athlete’s belief in her ability to perform. Some kids build their confidence by being naturally talented. They are very lucky. Others derive confidence from practicing and mastering skills. Here are some factors that help young athletes feel confident:

  • Having supportive parents and friends
  • Attending Practices
  • Performing well in practice
  • Having access to good coaches
  • Having access to good equipment
  • Being fit

Fortunately you are a member of the Gotham Girls Futbol Club where we strive to empower your daughter at every stage of the game. We have licensed, professional coaches who believe in your daughter’s ability to reach her goals using soccer.

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams visits GGFC

Gotham Girls FC had a special visitor on Monday April 13, Senior Science Correspondent Robert Bazell. He brought his crew down to Chelsea Waterside Park to do report on a story concerning female athletes and ACL tears in the knee. He was greeted by our enthusiastic U10 Magic and U11 Bulldogs players. They gave the crew a warm welcome and plenty of great tape for the piece!

I am a veteran ACL recovery story. I have torn both my ACL’s while playing soccer. It is a challenging injury to recover from. To help GGFC players reduce their risk of injury, the club’s coaches have become educated on how to implement specific exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and teach the player’s how to land and pivot with bent knees. There are many factors that put girls at risk, both physiologically and biologically.

Robert Bazell highlights these risk factors in the piece he did with us on Monday. Coach Nicola Baker (U10) and Oswaldo Palomino(U11), took the girls through a warm up with all the knee and hamstring targeted exercises that we build into our warm up routines. Check it out!
